Service
Pop-ups
The Goal of Service Pop Ups: To connect the community through regularly scheduled service projects open to community members of all ages.
YCS hosts Service Pop Ups throughout the year to provide service opportunities to our local community members. Each Service Pop Up is a one-time event where we welcome youth, individuals, families, neighborhood groups, and friends to engage together in service.
We frequently host the events with one of our many community partners. Each Service Pop Up identifies a specific local organization to support. Past Service Pop Up volunteers have contributed to Lytton Gardens Senior Community, the Ecumenical Hunger Program, and LifeMoves Mountain View Interim Housing Community.
Check our Do Service Calendar for details about upcoming events.
"It is an honor to partner with YCS!"
— Lee Pfab, Executive Director,
Palo Alto Community Child Care
A busy schedule can make it difficult to commit to an ongoing volunteer position. We offer the Service Pop Ups as a singular opportunity whereby anyone who has a few spare hours can participate, and we always welcome drop-in participants at the Service Pop Ups. Past participants have appreciated the ability to try a service area before deciding to take on a longer-term commitment.
"If you have food in your stomach, you can use your mind to attend to other needs."
— Bill Kwong, whose family participated
in one of our food drives
Service Pop Ups are also a wonderful way to connect with fellow community members of different ages. These intergenerational connections are vital to a thriving community.
Research out of Harvard on youth development has shown that the single most common factor for children to build resiliency and to increase likelihood of positive outcomes is to have at least one positive relationship with a parent, caregiver, or other adult. That relationship can counterbalance already experienced adversity as well as build resiliency to meet future challenges.
